Which Nikko tour should you book? Every day trip from Tokyo compared

For most people the Ginza coach day is the one to book: two and a half hours at Toshogu with a guide, then Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji, from about €70. Take the Shinjuku coach if you want the shrine ticket included, the budget coach for the most time at the shrine for the least money, and a private car if you are three to six or want the upper falls and Lake Yunoko.

The tours side by side

Every tour below leaves Tokyo in the morning, goes to Toshogu and up the Irohazaka to the lake, and is back in the evening, about ten hours in all. What changes is how long you get at the shrine, whether someone explains it, whether the ticket is included and how far up the valley you go. Prices are GetYourGuide's lowest on 21 October 2026; the calendar on each tour's page has today's.

If it is your first time and you want Toshogu explained

Book the Ginza coach day with the Toshogu ticket option. It is the most booked Nikko tour on GetYourGuide by a long way, and it gives the shrine the most time of any guided day: two and a half hours, with a guide who takes you through the Yomeimon gate, the three monkeys and the sleeping cat and explains what you are looking at.

If you are staying in Shinjuku, the H.I.S. coach from Nishi-Shinjuku is the same idea with less time at the shrine, a licensed guide, and the ticket and an optional lunch in every booking.

Our take on each: Nikko day trip from Tokyo: Toshogu, Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji · Nikko guided bus tour from Shinjuku, with the Toshogu ticket.

If price matters most

The budget coach is the cheapest way to Nikko on GetYourGuide and, oddly, gives you the longest at Toshogu: three hours of free time, which is enough for the whole shrine, the climb to Ieyasu's tomb and lunch in the town. The catch is that no one comes in with you, the ticket is extra, and the guide may explain things in several languages on a mixed coach.

For one or two travellers who would rather not be on a coach, the private driver-guide priced per person is the cheapest private option on GetYourGuide.

Our take on each: Budget Nikko bus tour from Tokyo with three hours at Toshogu · Nikko private tour with an English-speaking driver-guide.

If you are three to six, or travelling with children

A private car starts to make sense from three people: the price is per group, the car collects you at your hotel and waits while you eat, and you can skip the stops that bore the children. The private guide and van is the one with the longest record and a wider route round the shrines; the private day to the upper falls goes further into the mountains, to Ryuzu Falls, Yudaki Falls and Lake Yunoko, and is the one to book for autumn colour in early October.

The small-group van, nine seats at most with hotel pick-up, sits in between: you get the comfort of a small group without paying for the whole car, and it ends in the Oya stone quarry, 30 metres underground.

Our take on each: Nikko private tour from Tokyo with your own guide and van · Private Nikko tour from Tokyo to Ryuzu Falls and Lake Yunoko · Nikko small-group tour from Tokyo, with the Oya stone quarry.

If you are staying in Nikko

With a night or two in Nikko you do not need a tour from Tokyo at all: the shrines are a walk or a short bus ride from the stations, and the bus climbs to Lake Chuzenji in about 50 minutes. Book the things that are better with a guide or a ticket in hand instead: the Toshogu ticket, exchanged at Tobu-Nikko Station, a three-hour e-bike ride round the lake and Senjogahara, a private tea ceremony in kimono in the town, or a day at Edo Wonderland near Kinugawa.

Nikko itinerary: one day or two, and what to do with each

Our take on each: Toshogu Shrine tickets · Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls e-bike tour · Tea ceremony and kimono in Nikko · Edo Wonderland tickets (Nikko Edomura).

What none of the day trips can fix

In mid October to early November the Irohazaka road up to the lake jams on weekends, and every tour, coach or private, can lose time to it; the operators shorten the stops at the lake to get you back. Go on a weekday if you can, and on a private tour ask for an early start.

The Akechidaira ropeway, the classic viewpoint over Kegon Falls and the lake, is closed for rebuilding until about September 2027, so any listing that still shows it will swap in another viewpoint.
