The Toshogu admission ticket, paid in advance and exchanged for a paper ticket at the tourist centre in Tobu-Nikko Station. Worth it if you arrive by train and want to skip the cash-only ticket queue at the shrine.
Starts inTobu-Nikko Station
Toshogu is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the shogunate that ruled Japan until 1868, rebuilt in its present form by his grandson Iemitsu in the first half of the 17th century. More than a dozen buildings stand in the cedar forest, covered in carving and gold leaf in a way you see nowhere else in Japan.
This voucher is the standard admission. You exchange it at the Tobu-Nikko Station tourist centre, open 8.20am to 5pm every day, by opening the link in your voucher email on your phone and pressing Use in front of the staff: screenshots and printouts are not accepted. Then the World Heritage route bus to the Omotesando stop takes about 15 minutes, and the shrine is a ten-minute walk.
At the gate the adult fee is 1,600 yen. Opening hours change by season, and the shrine publishes them on its website.
Through the year
Arrive at opening time to see the Yomeimon gate without the coach groups. In autumn the shrine forest turns in early November; in winter the paths can be icy.
Buy it if you are coming by train to Tobu-Nikko or JR Nikko, both a few minutes apart: the exchange is on your way. If you are on a guided coach day, choose the coach option with the ticket instead.
Checked against the GetYourGuide listing on 21 October 2026. Prices and options change: the calendar shows the current ones.
The digital ticket does not get you in: you exchange it for a paper ticket at the Tobu-Nikko Station tourist centre (8.20am to 5pm), on your phone with a live connection, before going to the shrine.
What to do. Go straight to the tourist centre when you get off the train.
1,600 yen for adults and high-school students and 550 yen for children at the gate, as sold by the shrine’s official partner.
No. You must open the voucher link on your phone and press Use in front of the staff at the tourist centre; screenshots and printouts are refused.
Take the Tobu bus on the World Heritage route to the Omotesando stop, about 15 minutes, then walk about 10 minutes. Walking all the way takes 30 to 40 minutes uphill.
