Private tours with a driver-guide

Nikko private tour from Tokyo with your own guide and van

Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 467 GetYourGuide reviewers

The best-reviewed private day to Nikko: a guide and a Vellfire, Alphard or Lexus for up to five, from your hotel in Tokyo, on a route you shape. For a family or two couples it costs not much more per head than a coach seat.

Starts inTokyo hotel pick-up

The guide collects you anywhere in Tokyo’s 23 wards, and the drive takes about two hours. From there the day is yours: the usual plan is Toshogu, Rinnoji Temple, the Shinkyo Bridge and the Tamozawa Imperial Villa in the town, then up the Irohazaka to Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji and the Senjogahara viewpoint.

If you would rather see Futarasan Shrine, Ryuzu Falls or the Jizo statues of Kanmangafuchi, say so; Edo Wonderland can be added too, for its own entrance fee. Guides speak English and, on request, Japanese, Italian, Dutch, Chinese, French or Spanish.

The tour runs about ten hours door to door. With nearly 470 reviews averaging close to five stars, it is the private Nikko tour with the longest record on GetYourGuide.

Through the year

In autumn, ask for an early start: the leaves turn at the lake in mid to late October and at the shrines in early November, and the Irohazaka fills up. The Akechidaira ropeway on the standard route is closed for rebuilding until about September 2027.

Why this one

It has the most reviews of the private days and a wider route than most. If you are one or two people, the per-person private tour with a driver-guide is cheaper; for three to five, this one usually wins.
