Nikko autumn leaves: when and where the colour turns

The colour starts at the top and works down: Yumoto and Senjogahara in early October, Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls and the Irohazaka in mid to late October, and the shrines and Nikko town in late October and early November. Aim for a weekday, start early to beat the traffic on the mountain road, and stay a night if you can.

When the leaves turn, from top to bottom

Nikko's autumn is long because the land climbs about 900 metres from the town to Yumoto. Each year varies by a week or so either way, but the pattern holds.

Nikko's tourist association and the main Japanese weather sites publish a colour report through October; check it in the week before you go.

The best places to see it

Ryuzu Falls, where the water slides down through maples, is the most photographed spot, and busiest in the morning. Senjogahara turns gold rather than red, and the boardwalk across it is easy walking. The Irohazaka's hairpins are best seen from the top, and Lake Chuzenji from the boat, which goes past slopes that drop straight into the water. Down in the town, the Shinkyo Bridge and the maples around Rinnoji and the Kanmangafuchi Jizo come last.

How to beat the traffic

On October weekends the road up the Irohazaka can take hours rather than 50 minutes, and every bus, coach and private car shares it. Go on a weekday; if you must go at a weekend, be on the first buses up and come down early, or stay at the lake and do the shrines the next day. Tours shorten the lake stops when the road is slow.

Tours that suit autumn

A private day lets you start early and stop where the light is good; the private day to the upper falls goes to Ryuzu Falls and Lake Yunoko, where the colour comes first. For the lake and Senjogahara under your own steam, the e-bike tour is three hours of the best scenery in Nikko.

Where to stay in autumn

Lake hotels and the ryokan at Yumoto sell out first for October weekends; book months ahead. A night by the lake puts you at Kegon Falls at dawn, before the traffic.

Yes. Coach and private tours run every day; go midweek, as weekend traffic shortens the stops at the lake.
