Nikko day trip from Tokyo: Toshogu, Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 2,426 GetYourGuide reviewers

If you want Nikko in one day without planning trains and mountain buses, this is the coach to book: two and a half hours with a guide at Toshogu, then up the Irohazaka to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji. Choose the option with the Toshogu ticket, and lunch if you want it sorted.

Starts inGinza, Tokyo

The day starts in Ginza, at Ginza Inz 2, across the street from the Hands store, a few minutes from Ginza Station exit C9 and JR Yurakucho. The coach takes about two and a half hours to Nikko, and you see the vermilion Shinkyo Bridge from the window as you arrive.

The longest stop is the one that matters: about two and a half hours at Toshogu Shrine with the guide, through the Yomeimon gate, past the three wise monkeys and the sleeping cat, with time to look properly at carvings most visitors rush past. With the ticket option you go inside the paid precinct; without it you have free time around the outside.

The coach then climbs the Irohazaka road to Kegon Falls, where you have about 70 minutes for lunch and the viewing deck, and stops for about 25 minutes on the shore of Lake Chuzenji. It is back in Ginza after about ten and a half hours in all.

The guides speak English and Spanish, and reviewers often mention them by name. On a day this long, a good guide is what you are paying for.

Through the year

In October and early November the Irohazaka is famous for its leaves and very busy, so stop times can shift. In winter Kegon Falls can freeze into columns of ice, and the lake shore is often white; the tour runs all year.
