Tea ceremony and kimono in Nikko

Rated 5 out of 5 by 9 GetYourGuide reviewers

An hour and a half in a quiet tatami tea room by the river in Nikko town: a certified teacher dresses you in kimono, shows you the ceremony and then hands you the whisk. Private, unhurried and indoors, so it suits any weather.

Starts inNikko town

You take off your shoes and step into a small tea room with a hanging scroll and golden folding screens. The host, who holds teaching certificates in tea ceremony, kimono dressing and ikebana, helps you choose a kimono and obi and dresses you.

Then the host performs the ceremony, explains what each movement means, and you make your own matcha, served with a seasonal Japanese sweet. There is time for photos in kimono in the tea room before you change back.

The tea room is in Nikko town near the Daiya river, past the Stay Nikko guesthouse along a gravel path; the operator says it uses tea utensils with a connection to Nikko.

Through the year

Indoors all year. The seasonal sweet changes with the month.
