A full day in a rebuilt town of the Edo period near Kinugawa Onsen, with ninja shows, the oiran procession, samurai lessons and the chance to walk round in costume. The best day out in the Nikko area for families, and more fun for adults than it sounds.
Starts inKinugawa Onsen
Edo Wonderland is a street-by-street reconstruction of an Edo-period town, with a fire tower, merchant houses, theatres and staff who stay in character. The day ticket covers entry, every exhibit, theatre and show, the free experiences such as the samurai sword and the ninja training hall, the children’s Edo work experience and the maze.
The ninja show and the oiran courtesan procession are the highlights for most visitors, and reviewers recommend planning the whole day: there is more to do than you expect, and the food stalls sell skewers, vegetables and sweets. Hiring a costume costs extra and is worth it for the photos.
The park is at Karakura, near Kinugawa Onsen: about 15 minutes by bus or 10 by taxi from Kinugawa-Onsen Station. A free shuttle runs from the Toshogu Omotesando via JR Nikko Station, first come first served, 39 seats.
Through the year
It is mostly outdoors, so pick a dry day. The park keeps a published calendar of opening days, and the free shuttle does not run when it is closed.
