How we choose and check

Every fact on a page comes from a source you could check yourself, and every page says when it was last checked.

Which tours are listed

We read every tour GetYourGuide sells for Nikko, its listing, what is included and what its reviewers say, and keep the ones that are genuinely good and different from each other. Where several operators sell the same coach day, we list the one that does it best and say why. Ratings are GetYourGuide’s, with the number of reviews they rest on.

Which hotels are listed

A curated list of hotels and ryokan in Nikko town, at Lake Chuzenji, in Yumoto Onsen and in Kinugawa Onsen that can be booked online. We favour places with real hot-spring baths, private baths and good food, and say plainly when a room has no private bathroom or a ryokan only takes dinner-inclusive bookings. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and the order of a list is never a ranking.

Sources

Facts are read from the hotel’s or operator’s own website first, then from official sources such as the shrines, Tobu Railway, JR East and the Nikko tourist association. Review sites are used to find questions, not answers: a drawback only appears when a primary source supports it, and each one links to that source.

Prices

A hotel’s “from” price is the lowest rate Expedia showed for two adults on a real, bookable night, including taxes, with the date printed under every price; for many ryokan that rate includes dinner and breakfast. Tours and tickets show GetYourGuide’s “from” price in euros on the date given, and the calendar on each page has today’s.

Photographs

Hotel photographs are from Expedia, through the Expedia Group Travel Creator Program. Photographs of tours and tickets are the operators’ own, from GetYourGuide.
