Private tours with a driver-guide
A private car and English-speaking driver for up to six that goes further up the valley than any other day trip: Ryuzu Falls, Yudaki Falls and Lake Yunoko as well as Kegon, the lake and Toshogu. Top rated by more than 350 reviewers.
Starts inTokyo hotel pick-up
Your driver collects you anywhere in Tokyo's 23 wards in a private van or sedan, with fuel, tolls and parking paid. Most day trips turn back at Lake Chuzenji; this one carries on up the valley to Ryuzu Falls, where the water runs down through maples in two streams, Yudaki Falls at the end of Lake Yunoko, and the lake itself, with a walk at each.
On the way down you stop at the moss-covered Jizo statues of Kanmangafuchi, Toshogu and the Shinkyo Bridge, and the Tamozawa Imperial Villa if there is time. Reviewers describe drivers who stretch the day to fit everything in and know the good viewpoints.
The driver speaks English and guides you between stops; a licensed guide who comes into the sites can be added for a fee. Entry fees and meals are paid on the day.
Through the year
Autumn colour starts at Lake Yunoko and Ryuzu Falls in early October, weeks before it reaches the shrines in late October or early November, so this is the tour to book early in the season. The road up to Yunoko can be snowy in winter.

It is the private day for nature: the falls and Lake Yunoko are what other tours leave out, and it takes up to six. For a guide who explains Toshogu inside, the per-group private tour with a guide is better; for one or two people, the per-person driver-guide is cheaper.

The listing starts at the Akechidaira ropeway, which closed for a major renewal on 16 January 2026 and is due to reopen around September 2027, according to Nikko's tourist board.
What to do. Ask the driver for more time at Ryuzu Falls or the Hangetsuyama viewpoint instead.
The operator calls it a driver-guide tour: the driver speaks English and explains the stops, but a licensed guide costs extra.
What to do. Add the licensed guide when you book if you want the shrine explained inside.
Per group, for up to six people.
Yes. The operator calls the route customisable; tell the driver what you want to see.
No. Toshogu, the Imperial Villa and any other paid sites are paid on the day, so bring cash.
