The Chuzenji Kanaya is the mountain sister of the Nikko Kanaya: a Western hotel built in the style of a log cabin, set in the woods on the western shore of Lake Chuzenji inside Nikko National Park. It has 57 rooms, and Expedia’s room list includes lake-view twins and triples.
The open-air hot-spring baths are in a separate building, the Soraburo, with forest all round. Dinner is French in the Dining Room, and the Yukon annex serves curry and lighter dishes on a terrace facing the lake. It is quieter than the hotels by the bus terminal at the east end of the lake, which is the point: evenings here are dark, still and cold.
