Eastern shore, Lake ChuzenjiOn our lists
The Ritz-Carlton opened on the shore of Lake Chuzenji in 2020, the brand’s first hotel with hot-spring baths. Its 94 rooms and suites all look out on the lake, on Mount Nantai, or on both, and the low timber building sits between the water and the forest at the eastern end of the lake, a short walk from Kegon Falls and the Chugushi bus terminal.
The onsen has indoor and open-air baths with natural hot-spring water, open from 5.30am to 11pm according to the hotel’s Expedia listing. Rates on Expedia include plans with a kaiseki dinner as well as breakfast-only stays. If you want one splurge night in Japan with mountains, water and a proper soak, this is the obvious one in Nikko.
The baths
Indoor and open-air baths with natural hot-spring water, shared by guests, open 5.30am to 11pm (hotel’s Expedia listing).
Getting around
