KAI is the Hoshino Resorts brand of small hot-spring ryokan, and KAI Kinugawa is its house on the Kinugawa river, about 15 minutes on foot from Kinugawa-Onsen Station. The 48 rooms take their look from the crafts of Tochigi, Mashiko pottery, indigo dyeing and local stone, and Expedia sells both standard Japanese-style rooms and rooms with their own outdoor bath.
There are two shared baths, a glass-walled indoor hall and an outdoor bath, and a massage room. Dinner is built round a signature hot pot, U-Kamo Nabe, with two broths and the hunting and river food of the region, and guests can join a Mashiko ceramics class. It is smaller and calmer than the big Kinugawa hotels.
