On our lists

Hananoyado Matsuya sits at the north end of Kinugawa Onsen, away from the big hotels on the gorge, with a garden and a stream running past. Its open-air bath is one of the largest in the town, set among trees, and the indoor baths are high-ceilinged and separate for men and women. A private bath made entirely of cypress can be booked by the hour.

Some of the tatami rooms have their own open-air hot-spring bath, a few with a view of the river, and they sleep up to five, which makes them good value for families. Dinner and breakfast are served in the ryokan way. The cheapest economy rooms are simple and may share toilets, so check the room before you book.

Why book Matsuya

  • One of the largest open-air baths in Kinugawa, among trees
  • Rooms with their own outdoor hot-spring tub
  • A cypress private bath to book by the hour
  • A quieter corner of the onsen town

The baths

Large shared indoor and open-air hot-spring baths; a cypress private bath for a fee; some rooms have their own open-air tub.
