On our lists

Nikko Nishimachi Club Aratouto has nine suites in Nishimachi, the old residential quarter west of the shrines, where most visitors never go. The rooms are large, around 50 square metres in the main building, with Western beds, and the annex suites have their own semi-open-air baths filled from the Nikko hot spring.

The restaurant cooks French dinners from local produce, and there are two private hot-spring baths for guests in the other rooms. With only nine rooms and a top guest score on Expedia, it feels more like a private house than a hotel, and Toshogu is a walk away along quiet lanes.
