Yumoto is the last village up the Nikko road, at about 1,500 metres on the shore of Lake Yunoko, and its springs are the reason to come: strong sulphur water that turns milky white in the air. Itaya is one of the old inns here and is described as a source-flow ryokan, its baths fed straight from the spring, with indoor and open-air pools.
Rooms on Expedia include Western twins with a mountain view, tatami rooms and larger Japanese-Western rooms for up to four. The usual stay is dinner and breakfast. Senjogahara marsh and the Lake Yunoko loop start at the door, so a night here turns a rushed day trip into a walk at dawn.
